Designing your first Custom Emblem ?

If you are designing your own emblem for the first time, we suggest that you keep in mind the step by step guidelines below. They will help you in translating your ideas into a specific emblem design. This in turn, will assist us in our efforts to create a beautiful emblem for you that will be worn with pride.

Step 1: Concept:

Every patch starts with an idea. That idea may be a theme, an event to commemorate, or a brand identity. A good emblem converts that idea into an understandable graphic. What is most important is that the emblem gets the intended message across to your intended audience. Simplicity is always best. Don't try to crowd in too many details. An idea, simply stated, makes for a better emblem.
Step 2: Design:

Prepare a rough or finished sketch, or send us a logo, letterhead, decal, photo, or sample emblem. Indicate all colors along side of your design or by coloring in the artwork. If you are not an artist, don't worry... you dont have to draw your ideas! Simply describe your emblem design in words. Our art department will interpret your ideas into a stunning graphic! If you are an artist, be as precise as you like. We will conform to your design as closely as possible.
Step 3: Shape:

Your design is not limited to the designs pictured here although they represent popular patterns. Use them if they are applicable but feel free to consider other shapes as well. If you get stuck, ask our Customer Service staff to email our 'shape sheet.' It has a teriffic number of sample shapes for you to choose from.
Step 4: Size:

The proper size for your custom emblem is usually determined by its intended use: For Hats - 2-1/2" to 3-1/2" sizes are most common. For shoulder patches or jacket patches, 3-1/2" to 5" sizes are preferred.

Back patches usually range from 6" x 10" to 8" x 12" sizes. 10" round back patches are common. Size = length + width divided by 2 i.e. 4" high x3" wide =7", divided by 2 = a 3.5" patch

Step 5: Lettering:

For best clarity, we recommend that all letters be at least 1/4" tall. Letters smaller than this tend to lose sharpness and will not stand out as effectively as larger letters. Allow plenty of room for the best legibility. If lettering seems cramped, consider abbreviating. Block letters are most common and work the best. However, many styles of lettering can be reproduced.
Step 6: Colors:

Select contrasting colors for a more dramatic and beautiful emblem. If light color lettering or design elements are desired, then select a dark background color. Use dark lettering or designs on a light background. Using a variety of colors will greatly add to the appearance of your emblem.

You may use up to 9 colors and one twill (background) color without incurring any extra charges. So be creative! Pick colors from our Thread Color Chart. If you have access to PMS (Pantone Matching System) you may specify exact colors from the PMS Color Chart. If you do not have acccess just describe your colors the best you can (ie. "bright red," or "light green," or, "navy blue", etc)

If you have an example or a current design you want to work from, please amil it or email it to us.
